Why Every Girl Needs to Take the ‘Break the Bias’ Pledge This IWD
Feb 17, 2025
International Women’s Day (IWD) is not just about celebrating women’s achievements—it’s about taking action to create a more equitable world. One of the most powerful ways to do this is by challenging gender bias. That’s why this year, we’re encouraging every girl to take the ‘Break the Bias’ Pledge, a commitment to identifying, addressing, and dismantling the stereotypes that hold women back.

What is the ‘Break the Bias’ Pledge?
The ‘Break the Bias’ Pledge is a commitment to challenge stereotypes, discrimination, and systemic barriers that prevent women from achieving their full potential. By taking this pledge, girls commit to:
-
Recognizing and calling out gender bias when they see it.
-
Challenging harmful stereotypes in school, sports, and careers.
-
Uplifting and supporting other girls and women.
-
Becoming role models who advocate for fairness and equality.
The pledge empowers girls to shift their mindset and actively contribute to a more inclusive society.
Why Every Girl Should Take the Pledge
1. Gender Bias is Everywhere—And It Starts Young
From a young age, girls are often told what they can and can’t do. Whether it’s being discouraged from pursuing STEM careers, facing unrealistic beauty standards, or being expected to behave a certain way, gender bias influences self-perception and future opportunities. The pledge helps girls become aware of these biases and gives them the tools to challenge them.
2. Confidence Begins with Self-Belief
When girls recognize and reject limiting beliefs, they step into their power. Saying “I can do anything” and truly believing it changes how they approach challenges. The Break the Bias Pledge is a first step toward cultivating a confident, fearless mindset.
3. Girls Who Take Action Become Leaders
Leadership starts with small, intentional actions. By taking the pledge, girls are encouraged to speak up in the classroom, support their peers, and advocate for fair treatment in everyday situations. These small steps create future leaders who aren’t afraid to stand up for equality.
4. Bias Affects Opportunities & Careers
Studies show that gender bias impacts everything from hiring decisions to promotions. The sooner girls learn to recognize and challenge these barriers, the more empowered they will be to break through them in their future careers.
5. It Creates a Ripple Effect
When one girl takes the pledge, she inspires others to do the same. A single conversation can spark change, whether it’s discussing fair treatment in sports, equal pay, or gender representation in leadership roles. The more people commit to breaking the bias, the closer we get to real change.
How to Take the ‘Break the Bias’ Pledge
Taking the pledge is simple yet powerful. Here’s how:
-
Write It Down – Print out or create a ‘Break the Bias’ Pledge card where you commit to challenging gender bias.
-
Say It Out Loud – Speaking affirmations makes them more impactful. Have girls say their pledge with confidence.
-
Make It Visible – Keep the pledge card somewhere they can see daily (notebook, locker, mirror).
-
Take Action – Encourage girls to share their pledge on social media or create posters promoting gender equality.
-
Lead by Example – Support and uplift other girls, challenge unfair treatment, and educate those around you.
Keep the Movement Going Beyond IWD
Taking the Break the Bias Pledge is just the beginning. Keep the momentum going by:
-
Hosting a workshop on recognizing and addressing bias.
-
Incorporating the FearlesslyKiND Curriculum into schools.
-
Encouraging mentorship between girls and inspiring women leaders.
-
Starting a leadership club focused on equality and empowerment.
Empowering girls to take the Break the Bias Pledge isn’t just about raising awareness—it’s about equipping them with the confidence and tools to create change. Whether in the classroom, on the field, or in future careers, every girl has the power to make a difference.
This International Women’s Day, let’s take a stand together. Encourage the girls in your life to take the pledge and start breaking the bias today!
