What age groups will I be able to work with?

That is up to you! Our graduates work with girls between the ages of 5-19, so you’ll be able to customize everything for your ideal, target audience.

Why do girls need empowerment programming?

Today, the world is waking up to the power and potential of girls. However, the road to empowerment is still fraught with many social, cultural, and personal hurdles. The impact of negative influences, gender stereotypes, and a lack of positive role models can inhibit the development of a girl's self-esteem, body image, confidence, and leadership abilities. Girls face unique challenges, but with quality empowerment programming, we can equip them to overcome these obstacles and seize opportunities.

To highlight the pressing need for girls' empowerment, here are some sobering facts:

The Dove Self Esteem Project found that 7 in 10 girls with low body esteem won't be assertive in their opinion or stick to their decision.
The National Report on Self Esteem reports that 78% of girls understand the importance of self-esteem, yet nearly 70% still struggle with low self-esteem.
According to the Girl Scout Research Institute, 93% of girls consider leadership as an important goal, yet only 21% believe they possess leadership skills such as confidence, problem-solving, and teamwork.
The Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media reports a stark gender disparity in media representation, with nearly three male characters for every female character in family films, which can affect girls' perceptions of their societal roles and leadership potential.
The American Association of University Women found that by middle school, girls are less interested in leadership roles than boys—a trend that continues into adulthood.
UNESCO reports that globally, 130 million girls between the ages of 6 and 17 are out of school, and 15 million girls of primary-school age—half of them in sub-Saharan Africa— will never even enter a classroom.

Is the programming specifically for girls?

Overcoming stereotypes: These programs can challenge gender stereotypes by showing girls that they can excel in areas typically associated with boys, such as STEM subjects or sports.
Positive role models: Girls-only programs often provide strong female mentors who can inspire and motivate girls to pursue their passions and interests.
Peer support: In a girls-only setting, participants can form strong bonds and friendships, which can enhance their learning experience and provide a network of support throughout their academic and professional careers.
Increased engagement: Research has shown that girls may be more likely to engage and participate in activities when they are in a single-gender environment, especially in subjects where they may feel underrepresented or less confident.

Here are three compelling studies that highlight the benefits of girls-only programming:

Good, J., Rattan, A., & Dweck, C. (2012). Why do women opt out? Sense of belonging and women's representation in mathematics. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 102(4), 700-717. This study suggests that fostering a sense of belonging in STEM fields can help to increase women's representation in these areas. Girls-only programming can contribute to creating such an inclusive environment.
Kessels, U. (2014). Bridging the gap by enhancing the fit: How stereotypes about STEM clash with stereotypes about girls. International Journal of Gender, Science and Technology, 6(2), 159-173. This study highlights the importance of challenging stereotypes and enhancing girls' fit in STEM subjects. Girls-only programs can provide the support needed to counteract negative stereotypes and help girls see themselves as capable and successful in these fields.
