Create Safe Spaces for Girls to Feel, Explore, and Own Their Emotions—Without Shame or Fear

Let’s be real—girls feel a lot. From joy and excitement to sadness, stress, and everything in between, emotions can come in strong, fast, and sometimes overwhelming. But when girls are given the tools to understand what they’re feeling and why, those emotions become teachers instead of something to avoid or fear.

Empowering girls to explore their emotions in fun, creative, and supportive ways sets the foundation for lifelong emotional intelligence and confidence. Whether you’re running a group, leading a class, or guiding one-on-one coaching sessions, these workshop ideas will help girls feel safe, seen, and strong enough to own their emotional world.

đź’ˇ Key Takeaways

  • Understanding emotions leads to stronger self-awareness, empathy, and resilience

  • Girls need spaces where all emotions are welcome—not just the “positive” ones

  • Fun and creative activities make emotional literacy feel engaging and accessible

  • When girls learn to name, express, and move through emotions, they grow inner calm and confidence

1. Feelings Wheel Exploration Workshop

Start with a large printed or drawn feelings wheel. Let girls color-code emotions they’ve felt recently, then reflect:

  • Which emotions come up most for you?

  • Which ones are hardest to talk about?

  • What helps you express or move through these feelings?
This simple tool builds emotional vocabulary—and makes feelings feel more manageable.

2. Mood Map Journaling Circle

Invite girls to draw a “map” of their emotions over the past week. They can use colors, shapes, symbols, or images. Afterward, offer reflection prompts like:

  • What patterns do you notice?

  • How did you handle tough moments?

  • What helped you feel better?
This activity connects emotions with experiences—and builds confidence in handling them.

3. Emotion Charades + Real Talk Reflection

Split the group into teams and have girls act out emotions (like worry, excitement, sadness, jealousy, joy). After each round, ask:

  • When have you felt this emotion?

  • What helped you get through it?
It’s a great combo of fun and depth that helps normalize emotional experiences.

4. Glitter Jar Workshop: From Chaos to Calm

Guide girls in making glitter jars as a visual metaphor for emotions. When shaken, the glitter represents a storm of feelings—and when it settles, so does the mind. Pair it with a breathing practice and a discussion about what helps us “settle our glitter” in real life.

5. “If My Feeling Had a Voice…” Art Project

Have girls choose a recent emotion and personify it. They can draw it, write a letter from it, or give it a name and a personality. Ask:

  • What does this feeling want you to know?

  • What does it need from you?
This builds emotional literacy and encourages self-compassion.

6. Color Your Calm Workshop

Give girls a blank “calm wheel” and have them fill it in with things that help them feel grounded—like breathing, nature, music, journaling, or hugs. Then have them create a personal “calm plan” they can turn to when they feel overwhelmed.

7. Emotional Superpowers Circle

Help girls recognize how every emotion—even the tough ones—can be a strength. For example:

  • Anger can help you set boundaries

  • Sadness can show you what matters

  • Anxiety can mean you care
Have girls name their “emotional superpowers” and how they’ve used them in real life.

8. Group Guided Visualization: Safe Space Meditation

Lead girls through a calming visualization where they create an inner “safe space” they can return to anytime they’re feeling overwhelmed. Let them draw or write about it afterward to anchor the experience. This becomes a go-to coping tool they can use again and again.
