Overcoming Low Self Esteem: Real Talk for Teen Girls Who Feel “Not Enough”

for educators for girls empowerment leaders for parents Apr 25, 2025

Because every girl deserves to know she is worthy—without changing a single thing about who she is.

Real talk: low self esteem is something almost every teen girl will wrestle with at some point. Maybe she’s comparing herself to others, feeling invisible at school, or stuck in a cycle of negative self-talk that won’t quit. The truth? It’s painful. And it’s more common than we think.

But here’s the good news—low self esteem isn’t a life sentence. It’s a season. A moment. A story that can be rewritten with time, support, and the right tools. When we create safe spaces for girls to be real, reflect honestly, and gently rebuild their self-worth, true transformation happens.

Whether you're a coach, parent, mentor, or educator, you have the power to help girls shift from “not enough” to more than enough.

💡 Key Takeaways

  • Low self esteem is common, but it can be overcome with support and intention

  • Girls need safe, judgment-free spaces to share what they’re feeling

  • Activities that build awareness, self compassion, and identity help girls reconnect with their worth

  • Encouraging real conversations is one of the most powerful tools you have

1. Normalize the Struggle

Start by letting girls know they’re not alone. Low self esteem isn’t a flaw—it’s a response to living in a world that often makes girls question their value. Help her name it without shame:
“I’m struggling with how I see myself—and that’s okay.”

2. Shift the Inner Dialogue

Teach girls to tune into their self talk. Ask:

  • What are you telling yourself when things go wrong?

  • Is that voice kind or critical?
Then help them reframe with affirmations like:
    “I am learning and growing.”
    “My mistakes don’t define me.”
“I am still worthy, even on my hard days.”

3. Journal It Out

Give her prompts that explore her feelings and strengths. Some of our favorites:

  • What do I wish I could believe about myself?

  • What makes me feel small—and what helps me feel strong?

  • What would my future, confident self say to me right now?

4. Do a Strengths Snapshot

Make a list of skills, personality traits, and kind things others have said about her. If she can’t think of any—ask a friend or group member to help! Seeing herself through others’ eyes can be a game-changer.

5. Use Affirmation Cards or Mirror Work

Have her read one positive affirmation each morning—out loud, in the mirror. It may feel awkward at first, but repetition helps rewire those beliefs.
Try:

  • “I deserve love and respect.”

  • “I am enough just as I am.”

  • “I am worthy of good things.”

6. Break the Comparison Trap

Help girls identify when they’re comparing themselves to others—especially online. Encourage digital detoxes, following empowering accounts, or creating a “real life > highlight reel” reminder list.

7. Celebrate Small Wins

Did she speak up in class? Set a boundary with a friend? Write in her journal three days in a row? That’s huge. Celebrate progress over perfection.

8. Build a Confidence Toolbox

Create a kit filled with empowering tools she can return to again and again:

  • A self esteem journal

  • Affirmation cards

  • Positive quotes

  • A calming playlist

  • A list of “things that make me feel like me”

9. Use Group Support to Build Belonging

Low self esteem often stems from feeling isolated. Girls' groups are powerful for showing girls they’re not alone. Sharing experiences, lifting each other up, and cheering each other on changes everything.

10. Reflect on Who She Really Is

Encourage deeper identity work. Ask:

  • What do I value?

  • What kind of person do I want to be?

  • Who am I when I’m not trying to impress anyone?

Let her write it. Draw it. Speak it. Own it.
